Mariner Report: Week of September 11, 2017

Men's Cross Country

Maine Maritime Academy men's cross country finished eighth out of 12 teams with a team score of 209 at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday. Freshman Cole Brundige finished 14th overall out of 131 runners, to lead the Mariners with a time of 29:44.7 on the 8K course. 

This weekend the Mariners travel to compete at the UMass.-Dartmouth Invitational. Last season the Mariners placed 28th out of 33 teams, and were led by Zachary Kinsman who placed 116th out of 242 runners. 

Women's Cross Country

Maine Maritime Academy women's cross country finished seventh out of 10 teams at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday. The Mariners combined for a team score of 234, and were led by junior Sierra James who finished 75th out of 130 runners with a time of 24:15.4 on the 5k course.

This weekend the Mariners travel to compete at the UMass.-Dartmouth Invitational. Last season the Mariners placed 34th out of 37 teams and were led by Jessica Faltings who placed 189th out of 275 runners. 

Football

The Mariners are coming off a bye week and will host Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday for the 45th Admiral’s Cup as part of Homecoming weekend.

Massachusetts Maritime holds a narrow 30-26 advantage over the Mariners, in a rivalry that dates back to 1946. The Mariners have won the last two meetings, but before that the Buccaneers won four-straight. In the last five meetings in Castine, the Mariners are 3-2. 

Golf

The Mariners opened up their season at the John Queenan Memorial Golf Tournament finishing fourth out of eight teams, led by freshman Connor Mersch. On Saturday, the Mariners defeated UMaine-Presque Isle in a dual match, led by Erich Klopfer who finished first overall.

This week, the Mariners compete at the UMaine-Farmington Invitational on Wednesday and the two-day Maine State Golf Association Collegiate Championships .

Men's Soccer 

The Mariners went 0-2 this week, falling to SUNY Maritime and Sarah Lawrence, and will open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday for homecoming when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 6:30 pm. 

The Mariners are 4-4-1 all-time against the Chargers, including a 2-2-1 record at home. Last season, the Mariners fell 3-0 to Colby-Sawyer in New Hampshire. 

Women's Soccer

The Mariners went 0-3 this week, falling to Bates on Tuesday night, Smith College on Saturday and Westfield State on Sunday. Maine Maritime will open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday for homecoming when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 4:00 pm.

The Chargers hold an 8-0 all-time record over the Mariners, including a 3-0 record when playing in Castine. Last season in a 3-2 loss, the Mariners received goals from Makayla Lewis and Allison Boulier.

Volleyball

The Mariners went 2-3 this week, starting with a 3-2 victory over Colby College on Wednesday and a 3-2 Bridgewater State at the Johnson & Wales University Invitational. Maine Maritime's Maria Perez was named to the JWU Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The Mariners travel to Husson University on Wednesday night for a non-conference match, before hosting the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic on Saturday and Sunday, with matches against SUNY Maritime, USMMA and Massachusetts Maritime. The Mariners will look to defend their 2016 Maritime Classic Championship on their own court.

Historically, the Mariners are 24-9 all-time against the Eagles, including a 9-4 record when playing at Husson. The Mariners have won the last nine meetings, including two 3-0 victories in both matches last season.

Against SUNY the Mariners are a perfect 7-0 all-time, including a 3-1 win last season. The Mariners are 3-3 all-time against Merchant Marine, including a 2-0 record when hosting and a 3-0 win last season. The Mariners are a perfect 10-0 all-time against Mass. Maritime, including a 3-0 win last season.
