Mariners Sweep; Taylor Ties Home Run Record
LYNDON, Vt. – Maine Maritime swept Lyndon State in a Sunday, North Atlantic Conference (NAC) double header. The Mariners (12-12, 5-7 NAC) won the first game 7-1, then followed on with an 8-0 win over the Hornets (9-19, 1-9 NAC) in the nightcap. Erica Taylor (Mesquite, Texas) belted her eighth home run of the season to tie teammate Leah Jackson's (Dedham, Maine) record for long balls in a season.
The Mariners plated four runs in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Jackson and Taylor's shot, a three-run blast. Autumn Jones (Windham, Maine) had a two-run single in the third and an RBI single in the fifth to close out the scoring in the contest. Jackson, Taylor and Jones had two hits each in the opener.
Abby Yeo (Bucksport, Maine) went the distance to get the win. She allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out six and walking none. Yeo worked both halves of the twinbill going seven innings in the nightcap to get her second win of the day, upping her record to 7-5. She twirled a shutout on four hits while striking out four and walking one in the second game.
In Game 2, the score was deadlocked at 0-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Mariners broke through for three runs. Two Lyndon errors added to the uprising that would give Maritime the lead for good.
One inning later, a two-run double by Taylor and a two-run single by Cindy Schultz (Bingham, Maine) blew the game open, sending the Mariners on to the sweep.
Taylor Young had two hits for the Hornets, and Meghan Gadapee was tagged with the loss in the opener. She allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits while fanning two and walking one.
Young, Ashley Barski, Jillian Emery and Autumn Thompson had one hit each in the second game for Lyndon. Katie Davis suffered the loss. She allowed six earned runs on five hits while fanning four and walking four.
The Mariners return to action on Wednesday when Maine Maritime hosts Husson in NAC play.
