MILTON, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy football amassed 260 yards of total offense and scored two defensive touchdowns in a heartbreaking 42-41 loss to Curry College on Saturday afternoon, in New England Football Conference action.
Junior quarterback Corey Creeger (Biddeford, Maine) tallied 70 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead the Mariner offense, while Cody O'Brien (Wells, Maine) recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Trenton J. Bouchard (Winslow, Maine) returned an interception for a touchdown to lead Maine Maritime's defense.
Jordan Susi (South Portland, Maine) returned the opening kickoff for 25 yards, setting up a 7-play, 60-yard scoring drive for the Mariners that began with a 24-yard completion from Creeger to Joshua Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) and was capped off by a four-yard touchdown rush from Creeger and an extra kick from Cameron Crook (Amherst, N.H.).
The Colonels responded on the next drive, orchestrating a 7-play, 71-yard drive highlighted by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Alex Corvese to Anthony Nastasi, and an extra point from Marc Mrozek to tie things up at 7-7.
Curry's defense held the Mariners on their next possession, and Corvese tossed another touchdown this time to Tyler Furey for 23 yards, to put the Colonels up 14-7.
On Curry's opening drive of the second quarter O'Brien recovered a fumble by Corvese and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-14.
Jake Cawlina pulled down a 15-yard touchdown pass, capping off an 8-play, 61-yard drive to give the Colonels a 21-14 lead.
Susi's 59-yard kickoff return gave the Mariners excellent field position on their next drive, setting up a 23-yard catch from Derek Breunig (Westbrook, Maine) to the Curry 1-yard line, and a Creeger touchdown carry. Crook's kick was good once again, to make it 21-21 with 3:17 remaining.
The Colonels retook a seven-point lead on their next drive, when D'Aundray Burcy ran the ball 54 yards for the touchdown.
Maine Maritime scored on their opening possession in the second half, putting together a 9-play, 55-yard drive highlighted by a 17-yard rush from Doolan that set up an the eventual 5-yard touchdown rush from Creeger, to close the gap to 28-27.
Bouchard came up big on the next Curry possession, picking off Corvese and returning the ball 41 yards for a touchdown, followed by a successful Creeger two-point conversion run, to make it 35-27 Mariners.
Curry tied things up once again, this time on a 24-yard touchdown catch by Nate Chartrand with a little under five minutes to go in the third quarter.
Creeger put the Mariners ahead with an 8-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, but the two-point conversion rush by James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) came up short, making it 41-35.
The Colonels took back a narrow, one-point lead on a 7-play 23-yard drive capped off by a 13-yard touchdown toss to Cawlina and an extra-point from Mrozek.
The Mariners came up empty on their next drive, and the Colonels escaped with the win.
Cody Chapman (Bangor, Maine) and O'Brien led the Mariner defense with nine tackles each. Doolan and Breunig pulled down two catches for 35 yards each and Ferrar amassed a team-high 128 rushing yards on 28 carries.
Curry's Steven Grogan led the Colonel defense with 13 tackles, and Corvese ended the afternoon with 305 passing yards on 30 completions and five touchdowns and Cawlina led the team with 133 receiving yards on nine catches and two touchdowns.
With the loss, the Mariners fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in the NEFC, while the Colonels improve to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Mariners return to action next Saturday, October 29 at Western New England at 1:00 pm.
