CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Husson University 14-10, on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Ritchie Field.
The Mariners struck first when Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) grabbed his first goal of the game on an assist from Tyler County (Auburn, Maine) from the faceoff. The Eagles responded with four-straight goals, led by back-to-back strikes from Zach Glazier, to take a 4-1 lead. County added his own goal at 5:18 to cut the gap to two goals, but the Eagles scored twice to double their advantage. The Mariners finished out the first quarter with a pair of goals from Whittemore and Andrew Waltz (Topsham, Maine) to close Husson's lead to 6-4.
The second quarter proved to be much like the first, the Eagles added three-straight to build a 9-4 lead, and outscored the Mariners 5-4 to take an 11-8 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the offense slowed down for both teams with Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) and Jacob Boothby tallying the lone goal for their teams to keep the gap at three goals in favor of Husson.
Grant-Roy scored to open up the final quarter, but the Eagles added two goals to hang on for the 14-10 victory.
Whittemore led the Mariners with four goals and an assist while also adding eight ground balls and two caused turnovers. Grant-Roy and County tallied two goals an assist each, while Grant-Roy added eight ground balls and a caused turnover and County scooped up three ground balls. Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.) and Waltz added the other goals for the Mariners, John Nevins (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) dished out three assists and Alec Grant (Hollis, N.H.) scooped up eight ground balls and led all-players with five caused turnovers.
Boothby led Husson with four goals and an assist, Glazier added three goals and two assists, and both Brooks Gay and Matt Verrill added a pair of goals. Chad Merrill and Tyler Talbot led the Eagles with eight ground balls each.
In net, Maine Maritime's Daniel Lee (Satellite Beach, Fla.) stopped 14 shots, and Husson's Nick Zavorotny tallied 12 saves.
The Mariners fall to 3-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 5-7 on the season and 4-3 in the NAC. With the win the Eagles earned the No. four seed and will host the fifth-seed Maine Maritime on Saturday, April 29 for a NAC Quarterfinal. Game times for the NAC Quarterfinals will be determined Wednesday afternoon.
