BANGOR, Maine – The keepers seized the day as Maine Maritime Academy battled Emmanuel's men to a scoreless tie at the Husson Soccer Classic.
The Mariners' (0-0-1) William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) recorded six saves over 110 minutes to earn the shutout. His Saints' (0-0-1) counterpart Garrett Charette was divine in making 14 stops.
Play tilted heavily towards the Emmanuel net in the first half with Charette making seven saves on 10 MMA advances. The field leveled in the second half with Emmanuel holding a 7-4 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
MMA outshot Emmanuel 5-2 in overtime with the difference coming in the second extra frame. Charette turned away two in the first overtime and came up with one save in the second overtime period.
Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, Maine) and Benjamin Russell (Farmington, Maine) fired five shots apiece to spearhead the Mariners' offense. Kevin Shirley and Matthew Koenmann each fired off a pair for the Saints.
Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow against at Husson. The Mariners will face the University of New England at 2:30 p.m.
