Late Header Sinks Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Lyndon State freshman Eric Nelson (Guildhall, Vt.) headed home his first collegiate goal late in the 82nd minute to hand Maine Maritime a 2-1 setback in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) soccer on Saturday.

The Hornets (4-6, 1-2 NAC) tilted the field towards the Mariners (4-3-1, 1-2 NAC) net for the bulk of the final 20 minutes.  On their fourth and final corner of the game, Lyndon fired a hard shot at close range. William Trace Lacour (Charlottesvile, Va.) blocked the initial blast, but it lined straight back to Nelson's forehead then straight into the right side of the net to break a deadlock that had stood for approximately 63 minutes.

The teams traded early goals with Lyndon striking first. Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt.) redirected a low cross on the goalline that had been sent in Teague Coyle (Northfield, N.H.) in the 15th minute. Less than two minutes later, Abduallah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) weaved through traffic and squeezed a shot under a sprawling Jason Gray (E. Thretfod, Vt.) to draw MMA even.

Gray denied six shots on the day, including a pair late. Lacour had three saves for the Mariners. Maine Maritime out-shot Lyndon State 18-13, and took nine corner kicks in the loss.

Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow against Johnson State. Lyndon State travels to Husson.
