Tipton Strikes in Swan Song

CASTINE, Maine – Nate Tipton (West Chester, Pa.) scored the game's only goal to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 1-0 win over Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday. The Mariners (8-4-3) senior was playing his final game on Ritchie Field.

Early in the second half, Maine Maritime built up a sustained offensive. After Owls' (4-10) keeper Richard Felbaum (Saco, Maine) denied an advance, Alex Pederson (Carmel, Maine) headed the rebound from the right post to Tipton off to his right. Tipton finished the play for the only goal of the afternoon.

Mariners keeper, William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) turned in 90 scoreless minutes for his ninth shutout of the season less than 24 hours after working 110 scoreless minutes on the road. Lacour denied five UMPI advances, including a handful of dangerous opportunities.

It was UMPI that scored the first goal of the season against Lacour in the Mariners fourth game of the year, ending a string of almost 300 scoreless minutes.

Lacour's counterpart, Felbaum, turned away six saves. He had to work for all of them as the Mariners put together the better scoring chances. The Mariners owned a 19-12 advantage in shots, but dominated the second half 14-4.

The win wraps up the regular season for Maine Maritime at 8-4-3. The 4-10 Owls return to action next Sunday at Maine-Machias.
