CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with Lyndon State College on Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Ritchie Field.
Maine Maritime maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the first half, but could not record a quality scoring opportunity until the 41st minute when Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) kicked a ball on net that Lyndon's keeper outstretched to play, but could not wrangle in. Gerald Aquino (Montville, Conn.) pressured the keeper and lobbed the loose ball into net for his first goal of the season.
The Hornets scored late in the game to tie things at 1-1. Lyndon's Dylan Jacobs found a loose ball following a corner kick that caused chaos in front of the net.
The Mariners pressured heavily in the two overtime periods, outshooting the Hornets 5-1, but could not break the stalemate.
Maine Martime's Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) tallied three saves in the draw, while Lyndon's Matt LaClair recorded six stops.
The Mariners are now 2-5-2 on the season and 1-3-3 in NAC play, while the Hornets are 4-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, October 3 at Bates College for a non-conference matchup at 8:00 pm.
