CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball cruised to a 68-33, non-conference victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle, on Tuesday night inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners improve to 14-7 on the season while the Owls drop to 3-17 overall. Maine Maritime will return to action on Friday, February 9 when they host Johnson State College for a 5:30 pm North Atlantic Conference matchup.
Maine Maritime jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Owls responded with five-unanswered points to take a brief 5-4 lead. The Mariners built a four-point lead (9-5), but UMaine-Presque Isle tied the game up at 9-9 with three minutes to play in the first quarter. Maine Maritime used a four-point run to take a 13-9 lead into the second quarter.
The Mariners began to pull away in the second quarter, and took a 14-point lead with 1:37 to play in the half, before the Owls used a layup to close the gap to 30-18 entering halftime.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led all players in the first half with eight points, while Teagan Lawyerson led UMPI with five points.
Maine Maritime outscored the Owls 14-1 to open up the third quarter and never looked back, claiming the 68-33 victory.
Felix scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Mariners and added two rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Chloe Smedley (York Maine) chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) contributed nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal and Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Maine) added seven points and a game-high six rebounds.
Rhylee Wright, Marissa Reagle, Jessy Dickison and Lawyerson each scored six points to lead the Owls.
The Mariners shot 47.2 percent from the floor while the Owls shot 30.0 percent. Maine Maritime also held a 38-24 edge in rebounds.
