NORTON, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Emmanuel College 3-1 (25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 26-24) and fell to Plattsburgh State 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 27-29, 25-22, 15-5) on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Wheaton Invitational.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Emmanuel College 1 (25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 26-24)
The Mariners put together a three-point run to take a slight 14-11 advantage in the closely contested first set, led by a kill and an ace from Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.). Emmanuel answered with four-straight points to take back the lead. Maine Maritime capitalized on back-to-back attack errors by the Saints to build a 21-18 lead and hung on for the 25-21 set win.
In the second set, the Mariners used a four-point run highlighted by two aces from Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) to take a 15-8 lead, and a three-point run highlighted by two aces from Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) to take a 23-11 lead and the eventual 25-14 win.
Maine Maritime went on an eight-point run to take a 19-18 lead late in the third set, but the two teams battled back-and-forth and the Saints narrowly edged the Mariners 25-23.
The fourth set proved to be just a close, with the two teams exchanging the lead multiple times until the Mariners scored three-straight to take the 26-24 victory.
O'Neal led the Mariners with 22 kills, two aces, two digs and a block, while teammate Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) tallied a double-double of 14 digs and 13 kills. Clark also added three blocks and an ace. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 20 digs. Spaulding tallied 24 assists, six aces, and five digs and Adams added 19 assists, eight digs, seven kills, six aces and four blocks.
Mary Shelow led Emmanuel with 12 kills, Sarah Schemerhorn led the team with 15 digs, Carly Church tallied 13 assists and Samantha DeMarco added 12 assists.
Plattsburgh State 3 – Maine Maritime Academy 2 (21-25, 25-22, 27-29, 25-22, 15-5)
The Mariners and Cardinals exchanged sets back-and-forth pushing the match to five sets. Plattsburgh State put together four-straight points early in the fifth set and outscored the Mariners 7-1 to close out the set and take the 15-5 set victory and 3-2 match win.
Clark tallied another double-double with 19 kills, 19 digs, two aces and two blocks. O'Neal tallied a match-high 20 kills, nine digs, four aces, two assists and a block while teammate Perez led all players once again, with 31 digs. Spaulding tallied 26 assists, six digs and an ace and Adams recorded 23 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and four blocks.
Hunter Grotjohn led the Cardinals with 17 kills and 17 digs, Sam Colombo added 19 digs, 16 kills and six aces. Bryanne Yasui tallied a team-high 30 digs.
The Mariners (3-2) return to action on Tuesday night when they host Husson University in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 pm.
