CASTINE, Maine -- Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) has been selected as a nominee for both the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) and NCAA Woman of the Year awards.
O'Neal served as a team captain her senior season on the women's volleyball team to finish out her impeccable undergraduate career on a high note. The 2013 NAC Rookie of the Year claimed the 2015 and 2016 NAC Player of the Year accolades and was a NAC All-Conference selection all four seasons. She helped lead the Mariners to the 2016 NAC Championship Title and to an NCAA Tournament berth. She was selected to participate in the NEWVA Senior All-Star Classic and was also named the 2015 MMA Female Athlete of the Year.
O'Neal graduated a semester early with Magna cum laude honors in Marine Biology, was named to the Dean's List, and earned the Dean's and Distinguished Scholar Scholarships. She was named the 2016 NAC Women's Volleyball Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, as the Maine Maritime Academy Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year and to the NAC All-Academic team. She coordinated community service projects with the "Volleykids" program, with Special Olympics and served as the President and Secretary of the MMA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Nine female student-athletes are up for the prestigious award which encompasses all facets of the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete experience, while O'Neal joins a record 543 (197 Division III) nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Both the NAC Man of the Year and Woman of the Year awards are modeled after the NCAA's Woman of the Year program, which honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
Both the NAC Man and Woman of the Year award winners will be announced in late July, and will be honored on their campuses during the 2017-18 academic year.
This marks the 27th year of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award program, which was started in 1991.
