WATERVILLE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy volleyball picked up a 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12) victory over non-conference opponent Colby College on Wednesday night.
The Mariners jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first set, and despite a late surge from the Mules, hung on for the 25-23 set victory. The Mules picked up a 25-14 victory in the second set to even the match score at 1-1, but the Mariners responded with a 25-17 victory in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth set proved to be another back-and-forth battle, with the Mules claiming the narrow 25-23 victory to tie the match at 2-2. In the deciding set, the Mariners faced a 12-8 deficit but put together seven unanswered points, led by three kills from sophomore Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) to take the match victory.
Freshman Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 14 kills, seven digs and four aces, Cacacie ended the evening with 11 kills, two digs and a block and sophomore Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied a match-high 22 digs.
Sophomore Hannah Butland (Cumberland, Maine) added 10 digs, three kills, two assists and two blocks, sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all players with 33 assists, and added nine digs, six kills, and three blocks, and Maryellyn Musselman (West Friendship, Md.) added six kills, five blocks, four digs and an assist.
Pagie Hanssen led the Mules with a double-double of 13 digs and 11 kills, Erin Maidman led the team with 21 digs, and Emily Moslener added a team-high 18 assists. Colby's Nicole Petherbridge led all players with five aces, while also chipping in with nine kills.
With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-12 all-time against the Mules, including back-to-back victories for the first time in program history after picking up a 3-1 victory in the previous meeting on October 26, 2016. The two teams meet later this season for a rematch on October 24 in Castine.
The Mariners improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Mules fall to 0-1. Maine Maritime hits the road this weekend to compete at the two-day Johnson & Wales Invitational beginning with a match against Bridgewater State on Friday at 6:00 pm.
