CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 3-1, and Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0 on Sunday to capture the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic.
The Mariners went 3-0 in the two-day tournament to capture the title for the second straight season. Sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) was named to the All-Tournament Team and sophomore Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) was named the Tournament MVP.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Merchant Marine Academy 1 (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22)
Maine Maritime picked up a narrow 25-22 victory in the hard fought opening set, but took a 25-18 victory in the second set to hold a 2-0 advantage in the match. USMMA answered back in the third set to take a 25-19 win, but Maine Maritime closed the deal in the fourth set defeating Merchant Marine 25-22 to take the 3-1 match victory.
Alexa Cacacie led Maine Maritime Academy with 16 kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks. Sydney Adams secured a double-double of 34 assists and 10 digs, and added six kills and three blocks, Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 26 digs, while teammate Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) added 11 digs.
Kate Lefler led USMMA with a double-double of 19 digs, and 11 kills and added three aces. Kyleigh Kappas led Merchant Marine with 29 assists, while also adding seven digs, a kill and a block.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 - Massachusetts Maritime 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-20)
Alexa Cacacie led the Mariners once again with 10 kills, five aces, two digs and two blocks. Sydney Adams recorded a match-high 21 assists, while adding three digs and two kills. Maria Perez contributed six digs and Rachel Bunker (Ellsworth, Maine) added five digs.
Marie Harrison led the Buccaneers with five kills, Kaylee Tolman added a team-high eight digs and Maddie Coughlin recorded three aces.
Maine Maritime improves to 7-5 overall, and will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Unity College for a non-conference match at 7:00 pm.
