CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners cruised to a 25-17 victory in the first set, but the Owls fought back and held a narrow lead in the second set, forcing the Mariners to come from behind to take a 26-24 victory in set two. The Mariners took the match 3-0, with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
Maryellyn Musselman (West Friendship, Md.) and Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with seven kills each. Musselman added one dig, while Cacacie tallies two digs and an ace. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 13 digs and also added five assists and an ace. Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had 12 digs, four kills, and two aces and Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the team with a match-high 22 assists, while also tallying 11 digs, two kills and an ace.
Maddie Thweatt led the Owls with seven kills, while Taylor Johnson recorded a team-best 12 digs and Brittney Harper led the team with 12 assists.
The Mariners improve to 13-9 overall, while the Owls fall to 9-14 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday when they host Green Mountain College and Castleton University for a pair of North Atlantic Conference matches beginning at 10:00 am.
