CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated Northern Vermont University-Johnson 5-0 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 7-3-1 overall and 4-1 in conference, while Johnson falls to 6-5-1 overall and 2-3 in conference.
Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) got the Mariners on the board early as he headed in a Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) corner kick in the 12th minute to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead, which held through the half. The Mariners outshot the Badgers 7-5 in the first half.
Backus got his second of the game as he finished another Caron corner in the 57th minute to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. Only minutes later Caron capitalized on a Badger turnover and fired it past Zach Blaser in the 62nd minute, giving the Mariners a 3-0 lead. The Mariners continued to find the back of the net as Caron found Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) on a cross in the 70th minute to extend the lead to 4-0. Only a minute later Moore finished a feed from Reuben Harrison (Heidelberg, Germany) to the right netting to push the lead to 5-0.
Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) made three saves in 80 minutes of play and the win for the Mariners, Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) made two saves in relief for Gray, and Blaser made five saves in the loss for the Badgers.
Maine Maritime returns to action, tomorrow, Sunday, October 12th, when they host Northern Vermont University-Lyndon at 12:00 PM on Ritchie Field.
