NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy men's cross country team competed in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, placing 25th out of 36 teams.
Sophomore Joseph Van Ess (Mechanicsville, Va.) was the top Mariner on the afternoon, finishing 85th in the 257 runner field on the five-mile course, with a time of 27:49.53. Freshman Benjamin Butterfield (Phillips, Maine) was the second Mariner to cross the finish line in 129th, with a time of 28:50.99.
Freshman William Procko (Brandford, Fla.) crossed the finish line in 158th, with a time of 29:21.97. Sophomore Liam Veverka (Hancock, N.H.) finished with a time of 30:12.81, placing 181st. Freshman Isaac Sewell (Bangor, Maine) round out the Mariners top five finishers in 236th with a time of 33:55.31.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute was the top team finisher with a team score of 61, UMass Lowell finished in second with a score of 83, and Trinity College finished third with a score of 88. Trinity's Weyessa McAlister was the top individual finisher with a time of 24:46.42.
Maine Maritime competed in the five-mile sub-varsity race placing 20th out of 21 teams with Senior Hunter Giacomuzzi (Sebec, Maine) being the top Mariner, finishing in 107th out of 167 runners, with a time of 34:05.89.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, October 5th, at the State of Maine Championships hosted by Colby College at 11:00am.
