The following Mental Health & Wellness Apps are not intended to be used in the place of professional or medical support when needed. Our hope is that these apps help promote mental health and wellness among our student-athletes. Feel like we've missed an app? We are always evolving and open to learning new and better ways to support our student-athletes. Please contact us if you feel like we are missing an app.

Anxiety

  • B2R: Breathe2Relax by National Centre for Telehealth and Technology. (iPhone and Android) Breathe2Relax is an app that teaches a skill called "diaphragmatic breathing" to help users feel more relaxed. Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as "belly breathing," is a common relaxation skill utilized in a variety of treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy, for anxiety and PTSD. Breathe2Relax helps users acquire this skill via guided practice sessions. Each session can be customized to change the overall length of the session, the breath rate, and other user preferences. Breathe2Relax also asks users to rate their stress before and after each practice session, graphing these responses to help users keep track of their progress.
  • MindShift by Anxiety Canada. (iPhone and Android) MindShift™ CBT uses scientifically proven strategies based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you learn to relax and be mindful, develop more effective ways of thinking, and use active steps to take charge of your anxiety.
  • SAM: Self-help for Anxiety Management by The University of West England. (iPhone and Android) SAM will help you to understand what causes your anxiety, monitor your anxious thoughts and behaviour over time and manage your anxiety through self-help exercises and private reflection.
  • Stop, Breathe & Think by MyLife, Inc. (iPhone and Android) MyLife offers a personalized mindfulness solution tailored to how you're feeling right now. 
  • What's Up? by Jackson Tempuera. (Android only) an app that utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods to help users cope with depression, anxiety, and anger. It features forums to connect with others, guides on staying grounded and calming breathing techniques. What's Up also includes a catastrophe scale which put your problems into a better perspective and can help control spiraling anxious thoughts.
  • Worry Watch: Anxiety Self Care by Akilan Rajendran. (iPhone only) WorryWatch provides mental health resources for college students and is downloadable through the App Store for a one-time low fee. WorryWatch allows the person to record any type of worry experienced throughout the day. After writing down an upsetting event or emotion, the user is provided with tools to reflect and assess each situation. Statistics about times and events causing negative feelings is generated to give an idea of stress triggers. The user may even find some of their worries are unfounded. A highlight of WorryWatch is that the app functions both online and offline. The interface is very easy to use and all journal entries easy to locate.

Crisis Support/Someone to talk too

  • Be Safe: You deserve help by Family Service Thames Valley. (iPhone and Android) Designed to help you make decisions in a crisis. Allows you to make a safety plan, offers information and options for getting help and resources in the London area and other regions. 
  • Bsafe: never walk alone by Bipper USA, Inc. (iPhone and Android) Designed to help you keep safe in social situations or when alone. Features include: GPS and Alerts to friends/family about your location, check-in alarms, video recording, and fake call to help you get out of unpleasant situations/dates.
  • MY3 by Mental Health Association Of New York City Inc. This app can help users stay connected and get through the most difficult moments. MY3 was developed by the Mental Health Association of New York. This app is aimed at people who are depressed and suicidal, and trains users to recognize suicide warning signs in others. MY3 asks you to choose three close contacts that you feel comfortable reaching out to when you're down and keeps you connected to this core network. This best part of this app is that it helps you create your own safety plan asking you to think through and list your own warning signs, coping strategies and support network, so that you can easily act when you recognize your warning signs.
  • 7 Cups by 7 Cups of Tea. (iPhone and Android) Designed to provide people with someone to talk too. The service is confidential and anonymous, and it connects you to a caring listener or an online therapist or counselor. Free with offers for in-app purchases. Available on both iOS and android. 
  • Talk Space Therapy. (iPhone and Android) Therapy can get expensive, so although Talk Space is not free, this app does connect you with licensed therapists at a price point that is much cheaper than traditional therapy. You can text message a trained professional as often as you need. There are discounts available for first-time users and you can cancel anytime if it no longer fits into your budget. Talk Space is a stigma-free and accessible way to connect to a therapist that fits your specific needs.
  • The Lifeline by Liane Weber of The LifeLine Canada Foundation (TLC). (iPhone and Android) The LifeLine App is the National free Suicide Prevention and Awareness App that offers access and guidance to support for those suffering in crisis and those who have suffered the devastating loss of a loved one from suicide. The LifeLine App also provides awareness education and prevention strategies to guide people in crisis all across the Globe.

Health: Fitness

  • Aaptiv by Skyfit Sports, Inc. (iPhone and Android) Designed to offer you personal training anytime, anywhere. Offers an on-demand audio fitness that combines your preferred music playlist and the guidance/voice of a trainer.
  • Couch to 5K® - Run training by Active Network, LLC. (iPhone and Android) Designed to train new/beginner runners to be 5K distance runners in 8 weeks. Provides a tracker and connects to your music. 
  • Sworkit by Nexercise. (iPhone and Android) Sworkit stands for "simply work it". Designed to take you through 5-60+minute workouts that require no equipment and can be done anytime/anywhere.

Health: Food

  • MyFitnessPal by MyFitnessPal.com. (iPhone and Android) Designed to help you track your food intake/calories and fitness activities. You can set different goals based on the day of the week and have customized calorie intake goals for each meal of the day. The app helps you log what you are eating/doing and helps you learn how you are fueling your body. You can do a lot with the free version, but there are more features with the premium membership which is $10/month or $50/year.
  • Foodsmart by Zipongo Inc. (iPhone and Android) Designed as a digital nutrition platform that helps you make healthier food choices based on personalized meal recommendations that meet your food and shopping preferences, needs, and goals. Offers healthy recipes, grocery list function, and local grocery deals. 
  • My Diet Coach by Inspired Apps. (iPhone and Android) This app helps you set your goal, track your progress, get reminders of what's important to you, make small, healthy lifestyle changes, boost your motivation and helps track hydration.

Meditation

  • BellyBio Interactive Breathing by RelaxLine. (iPhone only) Biofeedback device that monitors your breathing and plays sounds reminiscent of ocean waves when you relax. Great for anxiety and stress. 
  • Calm by Calm.com. (iPhone and Android) Calm is an app for Sleep, Meditation and Relaxation. Helps people experience better sleep, lower stress, and less anxiety with guided meditations, Sleep Stories, breathing programs, stretching exercises, and relaxing music. Provides guided meditation, ranging from 3 to 25 minutes. Offers various soft music options to take you to your sanctuary. Free with offers for in-app purchases.
  • Headspace by Headspace Inc. (iPhone and Android) Headspace offers guided meditation to relax app users and reduce stress and anxiety. A free basic guide is available for new users. This guide is a 10-day course designed to teach the person the key facets of meditation and mindfulness. Meditation options are available based on areas of concern. As an example, Headspace has meditation for students, work, stress, anxiety, focus, and sleep. The meditation library is vast on the app. Users can choose a meditation session based on available time. Each session ranges between one minute long to over ten minutes.
  • Insight Timer by Insight Network, Inc. Meditation has countless benefits. With consistency, meditation can increase focus, relaxation and lesson worry and anxiety. Insight Timer is a free app that offers over 10,000 guided meditations. The app offers free courses on meditation and includes charts and milestones so users can track progress. Users can modify their mediation sessions by adding nature sounds, music or bells. Session length can be customized using the built-in timer. Insight Timer has over 3,000 discussion groups and local-meetups run by its users.
  • Omvana: Get in Flow by Minvalley Creations Inc. (iPhone and Android) Offers personalized guided meditations and includes background music. Provides a health kit to help you recognize your stress level and respond accordingly so as to promote calmness. Free with offers for in-app purchases. 
  • Shine by The Shine App (iPhone and Android) A motivational text service turned wellness platform. Founded by two women of color, their goal is to "reinvent health and wellness for Millennials through messaging technology." Once you sign up online the Shine team will text you daily tips, motivational messages and bite-sized researched backed advice. The app features meditations, affirmations and personalized challenges that focus on self-love, anxiety, and productivity. Free version includes a daily meditation, a daily article and a daily gratitude log. More included with a 64.99/yr membership. 
  • Smiling Mind by Smiling Minds. (iPhone and Android) It is a tool designed to make meditation and mindfulness easy. Includes a tracker and daily meditations geared for specific age groups.
  • Ten Percent happier by 10% Happier Inc. (iPhone and Android) "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics". Clear, simple approach to learn meditation, and/or improve your meditation practice. 

Pandemic Support

  • COVID Coach (iPhone and Android) COVID Coach is designed to help you build resilience, manage stress, and increase your well-being during this crisis. The app is free, secure, and helps connect you to important resources for coping and adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Forest by Seekrtech Co., LTD. ($1.99 iPhone and Android) Designed to help users focus and avoid getting distracted by their phones while studying. Set a time on your phone when you want to concentrate on studies and the app will "grow" a virtual tree while you work. Set the app to the stress-free growing mode or challenge yourself to keep your tree alive by not using any other apps. See how many you can plant.

Sleep Support

  • CBT-i Coach. (iPhone and Android) The app will guide users through the process of learning about sleep, developing positive sleep routines, and improving their sleep environments. It provides a structured program that teaches strategies proven to improve sleep and help alleviate symptoms of insomnia.
  • Relax and Sleep Well with Glenn Harrold by Glenn Harrold. (iPhone and Android) Offers self-hypnosis and meditation recordings to help improve sleep, decrease stress, and promote relaxation.
  • Sleepio-The sleep improvement app by Big Health Ltd. (iPhone and Android) Developed by a clinical research team made of CBT clinical psychologists and sleep researchers. Designed to improve your sleep using CBT techniques that address your thoughts, lifestyle, and sleep routine. Free with offers for in-app purchases.
  • Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock by Northcube AB. (iPhone and Android) Uses your phone to analyze your sleep pattern, and wake you up in your lightest sleep phase. Designed to make waking up easy and natural.

Sobriety Support

  • Sober Grid by Sober Grid, LLC. (iPhone and Android) Provides a sober social network that offers 24/7 peer support and other resources to help maintain sobriety. Offers a sobriety counter to track your recovery. Free with offers for in-app purchases.
  • Sober Tool by Blitzen LLC. (iPhone and Android) Designed to support people recovering from alcoholism and addition problems. Offers a sobriety tracker, rewards, inspirational messages, and support meeting finder, connection to sober community, relapse prevention resources, and relapse help. 
  • Stop Drinking with Andrew Johnson by University Relaxation. (iPhone and Android $2.49) This app is designed to help people cope with the emotional and physical cravings for alcohol.
  • WEconnect - Recovery Aftercare by Pala-linq Social Purpose Corporation. (iPhone and Android) Supports recovery from addiction. Provides a tracker to view progress and helpful routines, encourages social connection, offers rewards for completion of activities/goals, and includes a SOS button when you require immediate support.

Student Resources

  • Class Timetable by Ice Media Creative. (iPhone and Android) Helps you schedule your homework, assignments, upcoming exams, reminders about upcoming-classes, and events.
  • My Class Schedule by Sebastian Mayer. (Android only) This app will not only keep you informed about your upcoming classes, but also reminds you of exams and unfinished homework. The main feature of this app is its timetable that shows your schedule for any particular day or week. Additionally there are many other helpful features, for example a grade overview with your average grades or the ability to automatically mute your phone during class. No matter if you go to school or university, this easy to use app helps you to keep track of all related tasks.
  • Timetable by Gabriel Ittner. (iPhone and Android) Helps you manage your timetable, homework, and studying for exams.

Support for Eating Disorders

  • Recovery record by Recovery Record (iPhone and Android) Designed as a self-help companion tool to treat any eating disorder. Connects you to a treatment team. Uses CBT and self-monitoring treatment approaches.
  • Rise up + recover by Recovery Warriors LLC. (iPhone and Android) Based upon CBT self-monitoring techniques, this app helps you track your meals, emotions, and behaviors related to food, body image, and exercise. 

Support for Mood and Depression

  • Caring For You by All Mental Health. (iPhone and Android) Caring for You is a free app with a wealth of articles to help you build wellness skills and healthy habits. We help you explore the importance of self-care. Learn how to worry less, challenge negative self-talk, clarify your values, and set goals that fill your life with meaning and progress.
  • Mind Your Mood by Family Service Thames Valley. (iPhone and Android) Designed to help you track your mood, understand your ups and downs, and to see the larger picture of your emotional health. Offers a scale to measure the intensity of your moods.
  • Positive Activity Jackpot. (iPhone and Android) PAJ uses a behavioral therapy called pleasant event scheduling (PES), which is used to overcome depression and build resilience. This app features augmented reality technology to help users find nearby enjoyable activities and makes activity suggestions with local options and the ability to invite friends. If you cannot make up your mind which fun thing to do, "pull the lever" and let the app's jackpot function make the choice for you.
  • ReliefLink by Emory University. (iPhone only) A companion app that includes mood tracking, reminders and safety plans. Location aware for finding the nearest hospitals and mental health treatment centers. Includes personalized coping mechanisms and assistance for finding therapists and support groups.
  • T2 Mood Tracker by National Center for Telehealth & Technology. (iPhone and Android) Tracks symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, stress and general well-being. Useful to share with clinicians and chart recovery.
  • Virtual Hope Box by National Center for Telehealth & Technology. (iPhone and Android) This app helps with coping relaxation, distraction from overwhelming emotion, and positive thinking. You can personalize the content on the app to meet your specific needs.

Trauma Resources (Veterans Support)

  • Operation Reach Out by The Guidance Group Inc. (iPhone and Android) This lifesaving app for iPhone and Android was developed by the military to prevent suicide. Recorded videos and menu options help users assess their thinking and reach out for help in crisis.
  • PTSD Coach by US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). (iPhone and Android) PTSD Coach was designed for those who have, or may have, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This app provides you with education about PTSD, information about professional care, a self-assessment for PTSD, opportunities to find support, and tools that can help you manage the stresses of daily life with PTSD. Tools range from relaxation skills and positive self-talk to anger management and other common self-help strategies. You can customize tools based on your preferences and can integrate your own contacts, photos, and music. This app can be used by people who are in treatment as well as those who are not.
  • Together Strong by Kognito. (iPhone and Android) The challenges don't end after deployment. Civilian life can be tough too. Use this free app to practice what to say and do when a peer is struggling with adjustment to civilian life.

Wellness and Motivation

  • Happify by Happify Inc. (iPhone and Android) Provides tools, techniques, and programs to help you improve your emotional wellbeing. The app features science-based activities and games that can help reduce stress overcome negative thoughts and build greater resilience. Happify is free to get started and you can upgrade to Happify Plus starting at $11.67/month.
  • Misu (Previously known as Stigma). tracks how much you sleep, your fitness, and food — your moods matter too. Throughout the day, Misu automatically tracks your happiness and anxiety index (0-100) dozens of times intermittently. This is done through an emotion detection AI that detects mood through facial micro expressions (such as subtle eye squinting or frowning).
  • MoodTools (iPhone and Android) To get started, the app asks the user to take a short quiz to gauge current mental state. The questionnaire is only nine questions long and intended to give a baseline for mood. Depression levels can be then tracked and shared with mental health providers. Diary entries allow the individual to create a feelings log. The person types down the situation and what type of emotions he or she had during the moment. A top feature for the app is a safety plan for the user to follow in case depression levels become severe. The step-by-step plan lists warning signs, coping strategies, reasons to live, and the contact names and numbers of loved ones and mental health professionals. 
  • ThinkUp: Positive Affirmations & Motivations Daily by Precise Wellness LLC. (iPhone and Android) Designed to help you develop and maintain a sense of positivity in your life. Offers personalized guided meditations geared towards your goals. Free with offers for in-app purchases. Available on iOS and android.
  • Sanvello by Sanvello Health (iPhone and Android) Provides mental health tips for college students on an easy-to-use platform. Sanvello is one of the most downloaded mental health apps of all time with more than 3 million users. The mental health activities included in the app were studied in 500 adults suffering from anxiety and depression and found to be highly effective. The app includes guided meditation, tips for building confidence and reducing stress, and a monitor to record heart rate. The app also provides a goal section to record mental health achievements. Sanvello is free to download with many tools open to all users. Premium features can be unlocked through a low fee.
  • SuperBetter by SuperBetter, LLC. (iPhone and Android) Designed as a game to help you feel stronger, increase resiliency, increase motivation and optimism, strengthen social connection, and helps you feel more capable to tackle challenges and achieve your goals.
