Maine Maritime Academy

Tony DeMuro, Head Men's & Women's Swimming Coach

Tell us about yourself: I grew up and still live in Bar Harbor, Maine. I was the MDI High School swim coach for 19 years and served as an assistant with the YMCA team during that time. I coached with Jim Willis, who replaced my father after 25 or so years as the head coach, meaning the MDI sharks have had two head coaches in the last 40+ years. The pool at the MDI YMCA is named after my father, talk about some big shoes! I just finished my first season as the MMA swim coach and couldn't be more thrilled to be part of the staff here at MMA and coaching a wonderful group of young adults on the swim team.

Favorite Aspect of Campus: My favorite thing about campus is the small town vibe. Everyone knows each other and is very nice. The scenery is fantastic, the people are nice, and the air is fresh. What's not to like?

Favorite moment while working at MMA (so far): My favorite moment is watching our young team absolutely crush our championship meet at the end of the season. We swam fast and we had fun, it's the combo we're looking for.

Fun Fact: My father owned three different restaurants at different times while I was growing up. He sold all three right before they became profitable!

Do you have pets?: I have one pet, a dog named Sandy. He is a Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso mix and loves my wife way more than he loves me.

Strangest item on display in your office: I don't have anything too weird on my desk. Some golf stuff maybe?

Favorite Color: My favorite color changes with my mood, like the ring!

Best Advice you ever received from a mentor: The best advice I ever got was to be my own person and not copy anyone else too closely.
