Steenberg is excited to serve as the new Assistant Sailing Coach at Maine Maritime Academy and to foster a love for the sport and a mastery of sailing dinghies, offshore keelboats, and all vessels in between.

As a year-round resident of Penobscot, Steenberg grew up sailing on the coast of Maine at Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill. He began in optimists when he was seven years old, continuing on to racing 420s at KYC, and in high school at George Stevens Academy.

Steenberg’s career in sailing began at KYC, where he worked over six summers as the Race Coach, Adult Sailing Instructor, and Head Instructor. After instructing in the summers, Steenberg attended college in Europe, majoring in Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark. After finishing his studies, Steenberg was employed in sales at Tesla Motors in Manhasset, N.Y.

Steenberg went on to serve as the first year-round Sailing Director at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club in Port Washington, N.Y.; growing their Junior program, instructing keelboat and powerboat courses, coaching the high school team, and facilitating regattas year round.

Steenberg is a Level 3 certified US Sailing Instructor and US Powerboating Instructor, with experience sailing and instructing on vessels of all types and sizes, including his own 33ft Pearson “Vandre” onboard which he has logged over 5000 nautical miles of offshore sailing.

Steenberg currently serves as Director for the Northeast Harbor Sailing School in the summer months, running a youth sailing program with over 240 sailors and managing a staff of 23 sailing instructors.
