Maine --- Junior forward Julianne Kowalski (Montville, N.J.) had a
double-double in scoring and rebounding as the Colby College
women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a
70-59 non-conference win over Maine Maritime Academy on Thursday
night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The
Mules are 4-0 overall heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. home game with
sixth-ranked Bowdoin College. The Mules are 14-3 at Wadsworth
Gymnasium over the past two years. Maine Maritime fell to 1-3
overall.
Kowalski
finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals,
and two blocked shots. Samantha Allen (Bridgton, Maine) had 11 of
her 15 points in the opening half as the Mules led 39-26 at the
break. Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) had 14 points and three
of Colby's nine blocked shots in the game, while Rachael Mack
(Augusta, Maine) scored eight points and pulled down seven
rebounds.
Sam
Goda (Eliot, Maine) paced the Mariners with 16 points and five
rebounds. Amethyst Cousins
(Bass Harbor, Maine) finished with nine points, while Maggie Smith (Bath,
Maine) and Brittany Hunt
(Hickory, N.C.) both scored eight. Cousins also had team-highs of
six rebounds and three assists.
Colby
opened up a 49-33 lead after Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) made a
pair of free throws with 16 minutes remaining. The Mariners,
though, chipped away at the lead and eventually got the margin to
63-57 on two free throws by Smith with 6:20 to play. Neither team
managed basket over the next 2:21 until Mack nailed a jumper with
3:59 to go and MMA never got closer the rest of the way.
