Lady Mariner Volleyball Opens Season With Convincing Wins


Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted Lesley University and the University of Maine at Machias for two non-conference match-ups Saturday at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. MMA won both matches 3-0, Lesley split their two matches, while UMaine Machias lost a pair.

In the first match the Lady Mariners beat the Lesley University Lynx by the score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, and 25-12). Sophomore transfer Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) led MMA with 14 kills on 28 attempts while senior captain Amy Young (Cumberland, ME) collected 6 kills and 4 blocks. Freshman setter Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) played well in her college debut collecting 17 assists while sophomore libero Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) added 17 digs. Kayley Rodriguez (Quincy, IL) led MMA with 4 service aces. Maeghan Chadwick (Chelmsford, MA) led the Lynx with 8 kills and 6 digs while freshman setter Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, PA) collected 21 assists in the match. The win improved MMA's record to 1-0 on the year while the Lynx drop to 0-1 on the season.

In the second match of the day, the Lynx of Lesley University defeated the Clippers from UMaine Machias by the score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-14). Amanda McCracken (Eldersburg, MD) led Lesley with 9 kills on just 11 attempts (.727%) to go along with 6 aces, while Lindsey Marek (Killingsworth, CT) added 9 kills of her own. Brenda Wilson (Bristol, CT) led the Lynx with 14 assists while Maeghan Chadwick pitched in with 5 aces. Amber Frey (Airville, PA) led Machias with 3 kills and 3 digs. The loss drops the Clippers to 0-1 on the year while Lesley improves to 1-1.

The third match of the day featured the Lady Mariners and the UMaine Machias Clippers going head to head. MMA dominated play and won the match 3-0 (25-5, 25-12, and 25-3). Chelsea Ward led the Lady Mariners with 7 kills while Amy Young and Stephanie DeHaven (Reisertown, MD) added 5 each. Lauren Sakahara collected 7 of MMA's 22 aces in the match while Jen Dixon had 17 assists. Alex Kolinich (Westford, VT) led Machias with 5 kills, while Elisa Boyd had a team high 6 assists. The win moves MMA to 2-0 on the season and the loss drops the Clippers to 0-2 on the year.
