Castleton,
VT - Freshman Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT) led all scorers with 21
points to lead the Castleton State College men's basketball team
past Maine Maritime, 67-57, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play
at Glenbrook Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The
Spartans improve to 9-6 overall (3-1 NAC). The Mariners fall to
5-10 (1-4 NAC).
Comstock
went 5-out-of-7 from the field including a near perfect day at the
line shooting 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Derrick Faragon
(Schenectady, NY) and Mike Knight (Spring Valley, NY) both chipped
in with 12 points apiece. Knight led the Spartans on the boards
with nine.
For
Maine Maritime, Tyler Pineo (Corinth,
ME) led the offense with 20 points shooting 6-out-of-13 from
3-point land. Center Shawn Dostie
(Bradley, ME) turned in 10 points with a 5-of-7 performance from
the field. Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) led the Mariners'
efforts on the boards bringing down eight total.
Maine
Maritime jumped out to an early 14-4 lead capped by a 3-ball from
Pineo at 13:31. Castleton charged back scoring nine straight points
to take a 15-14 lead at 9:24 with Comstock finding the bottom of
the bucket with a layup over a defender.
Ben Russell
(Farmington, ME) answered moments later with a 15-foot jump shot
regaining the lead at 16-15 at the 9:10 mark. The Mariners did not
relinquish that lead for the rest of the half taking a 30-26 lead
into the locker room.
The
Spartans went on a 13-2 run to open the second half taking a 40-35
lead at 13:03 as Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT) found Comstock on
the fast-break feeding the guard with an alley-oop for the
bucket.
Bryant
Ciomei (Deer Isle, ME) tied the contest at 44-44 at the 10:44 mark
canning a 3-pointer from the right-elbow.
Castleton
responded shortly after with an 11-0 run to put the game away.
Comstock scored five points during that stretch and Hughes finished
the run connecting on a straightaway 3-pointer at 5:45 to give the
Spartans a 56-44 lead.
Castleton
returns to action on January 26 at Green Mountain for a 6:00
tip-off. Maine Maritime hosts Colby College on January 26 at 8:00
p.m.
