Bates wins Mariner Classic

Yanofsky named tournament MVP

Castine, ME. – Bates College (8-3) won the Mariner Classic Championship game by the score of 76-53 over Maine Maritime (4-5) Tuesday evening at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. Lauren Yanofsky poured in a game high 21 points and was named the tournament MVP for her efforts. In the consolation game of the Mariner Classic, the Gordon Fighting Scots beat the University of Maine at Fort Kent 65-57 to earn third place.

Yanofsky (Belmont, MA) shot 8-for-16 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw, while adding eight rebounds three assists, three blocks, and two steals. First-year guard Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) added 13 points to go along with seven boards and four assists. Sophomore Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) matched a season-high with 11 points while sophomore Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) dished out a team-high six assists to go along with 12 points.

Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) led the Lady Mariners with 14 points and six rebounds while Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) played well scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds. Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) led MMA with four assists.

The Bobcats led the Lady Mariners 44-20 at halftime but the Lady Mariners responded with a well-played second half that saw them outscore Bates 33-32. Bates had 23 assists to MMA's 19 and won the rebound battle collecting 38 to MMA's 35.

Bates point guard, Annie Burns, joined Yanofsky on the All-Tournament Team while Sam Goda and Jess Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) were named to the team from Maine Maritime.

In the consolation game, sophomore Heather DeKleine (Wayland, MI) led Gordon (6-5) to a thrilling 65-57 overtime victory. DeKleine was named to the All-Tournament Team after having back-to-back 21-point games. She had six rebounds, six assists, and five steals to go along with her 21 points.

Marybeth Conlon (Wakefield, MA) played well in the win scoring 10 points and grabbing a game high 14 rebounds. Brianne Records (Bar Harbor, ME) led the Fighting Scots with seven assists and contributed 10 points while Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, NY) chipped in with 16 points before fouling out at the end of regulation.

Kristin Violette (Eagle Lake, ME) led the Bengals (4-6) with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Amber Garrison (Oroville, CA) had a game high 10 assists to go along with 14 points. Maliesha Caesar (Cayon, St. Kitts) and Phyllis Fortune (Detroit, MI) added 13 and 11 points respectively. Violette was named to the All-Tournament Team.
