Maritime Academy Lady Mariner soccer team fell to the Castleton
State College Spartans 4-1 in a North Atlantic Conference match-up
at Ritchie Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior striker Courtney
Chadburn (No. Clarendon, VT) scored twice for the Spartans in the
victory.
The Lady Mariners struck first in the
10th minute on a Natasha
Morris (Faifield, ME) unassisted goal. Morris collected a loose
ball on the left edge of the box and slid the ball past the
Castleton keeper for the 1-0 lead. Both teams remained scoreless
for the rest of the half and MMA took a 1-0 lead into the
halftime.
The Spartans evened the score in the
59th minute when Courtney Chadburn dribbled through the
MMA defense and passed the ball into the corner of the net for the
equalizer. The Spartans struck again four minutes later when Hilary
Cooke (Marlborough, CT) collected a cross from Kelsey Lenney
(Coxsackie, NY) and tucked it into the left corner to give the
visitors the 2-1 lead.
The Spartans increased their lead to
3-1 in the 82nd minute when Courtney Chadburn scored her
second goal of the match. The goal came off of a corner kick by
Brynn Campbell (Clarendon, VT), that reached the far post, and
Chadburn was there to knock it into the net for the two-goal
advantage. The Spartans finished off the scoring in the
89th minute on a Hannah Josselyn (Ludlow, VT) goal from
a loose ball inside the penalty area.
Lacey Jackson
(York, PA) took the loss for MMA and falls to 4-8-1 on the year
while Ericka Davis (Cambridge, VT) got the win for the
Spartans.
The Spartans improve to 13-2-0 overall
and 6-0-0 in the NAC while the Lady Mariners fall to 4-8-1 overall
and 1-4-0 in the NAC.
