WATERVILLE, Maine ---Maine Maritime outside hitter Chelsea Ward
(Homer, AK) had 38 kills and 42 digs on the day but it wasn't
enough as the Lady Mariners fell 3-2 to the Mules from Colby
College and 3-1 to Colby Sawyer in non-conference volleyball
Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Mules (6-12) took a 19-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 victory
over the Mariners (12-9). Colby also lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19)
to Colby-Sawyer College, while Maine Maritime also fell to
Colby-Sawyer in four games by scores of 25-27, 25-17, 25-19,
25-18.
Chelsea Ward led Maine Maritime with 19 kills, 24 digs, and a pair
of aces. Melissa Lail finished with 11 kills, 13 digs, and five
blocks. The Mariners also received 32 assists from Jennifer Dixon
and 27 digs by Lauren Sakahara.
Reich was just two digs away from tying the Colby record for a
five-game match. Current assistant coach Cait Cleaver, an
All-American during her playing days with the Mules, has the record
with 44 digs.
Lily Kramlich-Taylor had a collegiate-high 14 kills, seven digs,
and two blocks in the MMA match for Colby. Caitlin Burchill
finished with 34 digs, 11 kills, and three aces for the Mules.
Heather Arvidson also had 11 kills and had six blocks, Kate
Pleasants had 30 digs and 23 assists, and Maggie Taylor added 20
digs, five aces, and six kills. The Mules also had eight kills and
three blocks from Kate Bellerose, and six kills and four blocks by
Mackie Sewell.
In the Colby-Sawyer match, Colby had eight kills and 10 digs from
Burchill. Pleasants finished with 11 digs and 17 assists,
Kramlich-Taylor had five kills, Taylor finished with 14 digs and
three kills, Reich had 14 digs, and Arvidson had four blocks and
four kills.
Ward led the way for MMA in the Colby-Sawyer match with 19 kills
and 18 digs. Dixon had 26 assists, nine digs, and seven aces.
Sakahara had 22 digs and Lail had six kills and five aces.
