Lady Mariners Win Two, Capture Top Seed in Playoffs

Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team defeated Johnson State College and Lyndon 3-0 on Saturday in North Atlantic Conference matches at Margaret Smith Gymnasium to improve to 6-0 in conference play. The wins secure the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs for the Lady Mariners.

 

Husson University also defeated Johnson and Lyndon 3-0 while both Vermont schools dropped two straight matches on the day. Husson will enter the playoffs as the #2 seed, Johnson advances as the 6th seed and Lyndon ends their season at 3-17 and 0-6 in the NAC.

 

In the first match of the day MMA cruised past Johnson State 3-0 (25-14, 25-5, 25-8). Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) led MMA with 12 kills on just 14 attacks to go along with six aces while Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) collected a team high 22 assists. The Lady Mariners combined for 26 aces in the match. Johnson State was led by Chelsea Vaillancourt (Enosburg Falls, VT) who collected five kills in the match to go along with a team high eight digs.

 

In the second match of the day, Husson University beat Lyndon 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, and 25-9). Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) led the Eagles with 12 kills and six aces while Michelle Smith (New Boston, NH) chipped in with five kills. Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) collected a team high 17 assists and has six aces. Christine Bailey (Lyndonville, VT) led the Hornets with four kills and Maegan Fried (Great Falls, MT) chipped in with seven digs.

 

The third match of the day featured the Husson University Eagles against the Johnson State College Badgers. Husson defeated the Badgers 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-9) and improves to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in the NAC. The Badgers fall to 3-17 overall and 1-5 in the NAC. Olstad led the Eagles with 10 kills and nine aces while Aleta Johnson collected 20 assists in the win. The Eagles collected 26 aces in the match. Johnson was led by Vaillancourt with six kills.

 
 

The final match of the afternoon had the Lady Mariners from Maine Maritime up against the Hornets from Lyndon. MMA won the match 3-0 (25-7, 25-5, and 25-15), improving to 15-9 on the season. Chelsea Ward paced MMA with 13 kills on 16 attacks while Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, CO) and Heather Moore (Macedon, NY) each finished with five. Dixon once again led the Lady Mariner attack with 23 assists and had a career high 10 aces.
