Castine, ME - The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team got their 2010-2011 season off to a fast start, scoring 93 points in a 93-53 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in a non-conference match-up on Monday night.

Juniors Sam Goda (Eliot, ME), Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) and Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) led the MMA attack, scoring a combined 49 points on a combined 20-for-26 shooting from the floor. Goda led the Lady Mariners with 18 points and eight rebounds while going 8-for-8 from the field while Smith scored 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting including three three-pointers. Hunt led the bench scoring with 15 points in the game.

The Lady Mariners were a bit sluggish in their first game of the season, turning the ball over 32 times despite collecting 32 assists on 37 field goals. Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) led MMA with seven assist in the game while Courtney Dufour (Augusta, ME) added five points, four assists and three steals.

MMA jumped out to an early lead in the first ten minutes and extended the lead to 21 at the half 49-28. The Lady Mariners continued their assault in the second half out scoring UMPI 40-25 to win going away by forty points.

With the win, MMA starts the season 1-0 while the Owls fall to 0-1.

UMaine Presque Isle was led by Rashell Sauciers (Washburn, ME) 13 points and six rebounds while Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) added 12 points and six rebounds of her own. Taylor-Jo Quint (Hodgdon, ME) had a game high seven steals in the loss.
