Castine, ME - The Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team erased a one point half time deficit by scoring 47 second half points and beat the Owls from UMaine Presque Isle 68-53 in a non-conference match-up on Monday night.
MMA's Paul Campbell (Camden, ME) led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a team high 12 rebounds in the victory. Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) came off the bench to score 11 points while freshman Dom Drake (Brewer, ME) scored 10 points and dished out four assists in his first collegiate game.
Maine Maritime struggled on the offensive end of the floor in the first half (33% shooting) but played well defensively and trailed by just one point 22-21 going into the break. The Mariners turned it around in the second half, scoring 47 points while shooting 51.6% from the floor, to run away with the win by 15-points.
With the win, MMA starts the season 1-0 while the Owls fall to 0-1.
UMaine Presque Isle was led by Brad Task (Easton, ME) who scored 14 points while Gerardo Vasquez (Houston, TX) added 13. Patrick Manifold (Great Yarmouth, UK) played well in the loss, scoring 11 points, dishing out at team high five assists while grabbing a game high 14 rebounds.
