Maine Maritime Advances to NAC Championship Match, Ward Dominates

Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted the North Atlantic Conference semifinals Friday evening at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. Maine Maritime and Husson each won their matches and move on to the championship game on Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCAA DIII National Tournament.

 

In the first semifinal match, the Lady Mariners beat the Castleton State College Spartans by the score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-3, and 25-10). Junior outside hitter Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) dominated play, collecting a career 27 kills on 40 attempts (.625%) while sophomore setter Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) collected a game high 28 assists. Junior opposite hitter Heather Moore (Macedon, NY) played well for MMA collecting seven kills and a game high 16 digs. Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) had a match high six aces. The Lady Mariners improve to 17-9 on the season with the win.

 

Chelsea Schlosser (Endicott, NY) and Ashley Kepaa (North Attleboro, MA) each had three kills to lead Castleton while Schlosser had a team high four assists. Alyssa Sherman (Argyle, NY) collected 11 digs for Castleton. Castleton ends their season at 8-13 overall.

 

In the second semi final match of the evening, the Eagles of Husson University defeated the Beavers from the University of Maine at Farmington by the score of 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-10). Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) led Husson with 13 kills to go along with four blocks, while Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) added 27 assists. Kaitlyn McKay (Lincoln, RI) was outstanding in the match, collecting eight kills, five aces, and 17 digs. With the win the eagles improve to 19-5 on the year.

 

Farmington was led by freshman Jen Vadnais (Arundel, ME) who had eight kills and 12 digs while Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) chipped in with six kills and six aces. Katie Allen (Bucksport, ME) had a team high 20 assists.

 

Maine Maritime and Husson will square off at 12pm on Saturday with the North Atlantic Conference title on the line.
