WATERVILLE, Maine --- Ben Foreman (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a collegiate-high 18 points as the Colby College men's basketball team took a 57-47 win over Maine Maritime Academy in the first round of the Colby Invitational on Saturday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Mules (4-2 overall) will meet the winner of the other contest between Rivier College/Framingham State in the championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Mariners (3-3) will play in the consolation game at noon.
Foreman was 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 from the foul line. He helped the Mules shoot 8-for-19 from 3-point range compared to the Mariners' 5-for-28 effort.
Van Loenen added a team-high six assists and pulled down five rebounds. Meanwhile, Russell overcame numerous double and triple teams to finish with eight rebounds. Kyle Donovan (Portland, Maine) led all rebounders with 11 (all defensive), while Eric Beaulieu (Concord, Mass.) had six points and seven rebounds.
Colby darted out to a 12-2 lead and held MMA without a field goal for nearly six minutes. The Mules took a 28-16 lead into halftime, but the Mariners did fight back and cut the lead to 40-35 with just 6:29 to play. The Mules, though, went on a 11-2 run to put the game away for good. Van Loenen had five points and assisted on the other two baskets during the run.
Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinham, Maine) finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mariners. Paul Campbell (Camden, Maine) added nine points, Sam Bell (Calais, Maine) had seven points and seven rebounds, and Dom Drake (Brewer, Maine) finished with a game-high seven assists.
