FARMINGTON,
Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy used a late push to grind out a
44-41 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North
Atlantic Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at
Dearborn Gymnasium.
The
Beavers (8-10 overall, 6-4 in the NAC) are scheduled to visit
Bowdoin College Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game. The Mariners ran their
record to 12-8 (7-2) and are scheduled to fac Husson University
Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Caitlyn
Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) poured in 20 points and hauled down 22
rebounds for Farmington, while Kenni Norton (Strong, ME) added
seven points and made three steals.
Jessica Stahl
(Bowdoin, ME) and Maggie Smith (Bath,
ME) each netted nine points for the Mariners with Samantha Goda (Eliot,
ME) grabbing 12 boards. Goda and Amethyst Cousins
(Bass Harbor, ME) each had three steals.
Both
teams struggled to score points with the Mariners shooting 27.1
percent (16-59) and the Beavers 25.5 percent (14-55), but Smith
struck for two jumpers and a 3-pointer in the final 5:25 to help
MMA to the victory.
Keyed
by a pair of Norton threes, the Beavers started the game with a
10-2 stretch over the 6:41. The Mariners were able to chip away at
the deficit throughout the opening period with a Devyn
Curless-Clark (Clinton, ME) basket with 49 seconds until
halftime tying the game at 16. Farmington took a 19-16 edge into
intermission.
The
Mariners were able to get the first distance of the second half
with six straight points for a 34-28 lead, but the Beavers nibbled
away with a Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) layup knotting the game at
34 with 5:25 left.
MMA
held the Beavers without a field goal over the next 4:12 with Smith
guiding the way to a 44-37 advantage with 1:28 remaining. Laflin
hit a pair of hoops over the final 1:13, but the Mariners went on
to the 44-41 win.
