Lady Mariners Pull Out Win At UMPI, 77-73

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Lady Owls battled to tough 77-73 loss against the Lady Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday afternoon in Wieden Gymnasium.



After losing by 40 points to the Mariners in an earlier season match-up, the Owls came out strong on the day and earned the one point half time advantage, 34-33, before being out-scored in the second half, 44-39. UMPI shot an impressive 53% from the floor in the game, including a 60% effort from the beyond the arc, and 86% from the charity stripe. The battle of the boards was tight, with MMA earning the one rebound advantage, 29-28.

 


Samantha Goda (Eliot, ME) led all scorers with 22 points (9-for-11 shooting), while pulling down 11 boards. Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) took over the game in the second half scoring 19 of her 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists in the Maine Maritime win. Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) played well dishing out a game high of nine assists and collecting four steals. Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) and Jess Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) each scored eight points in the win for MMA.



Freshman Renee Moore (Lisbon, ME) led her Owl team with a 16 point effort, going 6-12 from the floor in 25 minutes of play. Sophomore Emily Pelletier (Fort Kent, ME) tallied 14 points in the game, while freshman Olivia McNally (Sherman, ME) chipped in with 11 points and two assists in 14 minutes of play. Freshman Rashell Saucier (Washburn, ME) recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to help her UMPI team in the losing effort. Point guard Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) dished out a team-high of four assists on the day, while adding seven points. Freshman Kaci Hudson (Windsor, ME) chipped in with six points and three assists on the day.



The Mariners had a strong start to the second half and led by as much as 11 points, before the Owls chipped into their lead. The score was within two with 30 seconds remaining in regulation before UMPI was forced to foul. With 15 seconds left on the clock, MMA knocked down both foul shots to make it a 4-point, two possession game. The Owls we're able to go coast to coast and convert on another play, bringing the game to within two points with 2.3 seconds on the clock. Once again, the Mariners were able to convert on two from the charity stripe to put the game at 77-73, where it stayed after a long three-point attempt by E. Moore as time ran out.
