Box Score Castine, ME - The Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball team cruised to a 86-32 victory over Johnson State College in both team's NAC opener Friday evening. The Lady Mariners had 30 assists on 35 field goals in the victory.
MMA jumped out to a 42-16 halftime lead after shooting 45% from the floor in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Mariner defense stifled the Badgers, forcing them into 31 turnovers on the night. MMA continued to apply the defensive pressure in the second half, allowing only 16 points and forcing the Badgers into 22% shooting. MMA out rebounded the Badgers 54 to 31 and collected 18 steals in the game.
Samantha Goda (Eliot, ME) led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting, while Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) contributed 14 points, and four assists in the win. Jess Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) and Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) both reached double figures with 10 and 11 points respectively. Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) played well in the win, collecting eight rebounds, six assists, and a game high five steals. Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) led all players with nine assists and only committed one turnover.
Catlyn Hughes (Canterbury, CT) led the Badgers with 10 points while Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, MA) led all players with 10 rebounds.
The win improves MMA to 7-5 on the year and 1-0 in the NAC while the Badgers fall to 4-7 and 0-1 in conference play. Both teams take to the court again tomorrow as the Lady Mariners host Lyndon College at 2pm while Johnson travels to Husson University.
