Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's volleyball team posted its 40th consecutive home victory with a 3-0 sweep of Maine-Machias on Wednesday evening. In addition to being the 40th straight win at Smith Gymnasium, the victory bumped the team's record to 22-4, matching the program mark for wins in a season, previously reached by the 2009 edition of the Mariners.
Set scores were 25-11, 25-17, 25-14.
Maine Maritime honored its six seniors prior to the evening's match. The class of 2012 led the charge to the victory with Chelsea Ward (Homer, Alaska) recording a dozen kills and a pair of block assists. Heather Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) fed the attack 17 assists.
The younger starters who watched early action from the bench made their mark as well. Jennifer Dixon (Ellicott City, Md.) came up with 13 assists on the Mariners 17 kills in the final set. Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) only logged a pair of sets, but that was enough time for the first-year to put up six kills on seven attacks as well as a solo block and an assisted block.
Machias got four kills from Jamyriah McPherson (Bradenton, Fla.), Heather Leonard (Dowagiac, Mich.), and Elisa Boyd (Anniston, Ala.). McPherson had a dozen digs, while Boyd recorded eight.
The 3-0 sweep was Maine Maritime's 18th shutout of the season, moving them within two of the program record of 20 set back in 2009. The Mariners are idle until next weekend's North Atlantic Conference Championships at Colby-Sawyer College.
