Castine, ME - The Lady Mariners from Maine Maritime held off a late comeback by the Thomas College Terriers to record an important North Atlantic Conference victory Tuesday night 66-50. Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) led the way for MMA collecting 12 points and 19 rebounds.
With the win MMA improves to 15-9 overall and 9-4 in conference play while the Terriers fall to 8-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
The Lady Mariners took an early 8-1 lead in the contest and never trailed the entire game despite a late push by Thomas College. MMA was set to take a nine point lead into halftime, but as time expired, Leah Jackson heaved a 40 foot shot that banked in at the buzzer to give MMA a 12-point advantage after 20 minutes.
The Lady Mariners pushed the lead to 18-points (51-33) midway throught the second half before Thomas came alive and inched back into the game. The Terriers went on a 17-3 run over the next seven minutes and with 2:32 to play in the game forced MMA into a time out with the score at 54-50.
The Lady Mariners settled down on both ends of the floor and finished the contest on a 12-0 spurt to put the game away and secure the 16-point win.
Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) led the Lady Mariners with 16 points and collected four assists while Leah Jackson scored 12 points and for the second consecutive game grabbed 19 rebounds. Jess Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) had 11 points and five boards while Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) collected a game high nine assists.
Karin Bird (Lee, ME) paced the Terriers with a game high 19 points and eight rebounds. Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, ME) had 13 points while Kellie Martel (Cambridge, ME) had 10.
