WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's volleyball team went 2-1 at the Colby Invitational this weekend. The Mariners (6-1) defeated Maine-Farmington 3-0 Friday evening, then followed on with a 3-0 win over Gordon on Saturday morning. Colby, the first team to take a set from MMA this season, gave the Mariners a dose of their own medicine with a 3-0 sweep for a perfect run through their own tourney.

Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) led the attack Friday evening in the sweep of Farmington (25-22, 27-25, 25-18). She recorded eight kills on 16 attacks and dug her team out five times. Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) recorded six kills on 11 attacks to go with three aces. Lauren Sakahara (Bellvue, Wash.) added three aces of her own. She had 10 digs in the match. Heather Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) fed the offense with 16 assists.

Having taken Friday night off, Chelsea Ward (Homer, Alaska) still played herself onto the All-Tournament team. She started her Saturday with nine kills on 14 attempts in the win over Gordon. Ward served up three aces, posted seven digs and was credited with a solo block and an assisted block in the 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-22) win against Gordon. Ward had 14 kills, six digs and four assists in the 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) Colby loss.

Kayley Rodriguez (Quincy, Ill.) offered four aces and six digs against Gordon, while Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, Md.) posted 23 assists, six digs and three kills. Rodriguez had five kills and five digs to go with a block against Colby.

The Mariners return to action on Tuesday night when Bates pays a visit to Smith Gymnasium.
