Box Score 2 THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maine Maritime won the Maritime Classic, sweeping through Mass.-Maritime and SUNY-Maritime on Sunday. Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Chelsea Ward (Homer, Alaska) was named to the all-tournament team.
Lail, who had a dozen kills in Saturday night's win over the United State Merchant Marine Academy, posted 12 more kills during Sunday's sweeps. Lail had seven kills, two aces and a block in the win over SUNY-Maritime. She had five kills and five aces to go with three digs and a block against Mass.-Maritime.
Ward had 25 digs, 13 kills, six assists, two aces and three blocks on the weekend. Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) also put together an impressive weekend. She posted three kills and four aces against Mass.-Maritime and six kills on 11 attacks in the sweep of SUNY-Maritime.
Heather Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) had six kills, six assists and two digs for the Mariners during the win over SUNY-Maritime. Ariel Knights (Brookton, Maine) posted five kills and three aces in the win over Mass.-Maritime.
The Mariners improved to 10-1 on the weekend and have posted 3-0 sweeps in nine of their 10 victories this season. The Mariners return to action on Friday night, kicking off homecoming weekend against Maine-Machias.
