Box Score STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College forced 27 turnovers, including 18 steals, to beat Maine Maritime 67-50 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Monks improved to 4-1 while Mariners fell to 1-2.
Casey Everest led all scorers with 16 points for Maine Maritime while Courtney Dufour added nine and Jillian Perron seven.
Morgan Cahill recorded her third double-double for Saint Joe's with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsay Moore led the Monks with 14 points and Abby Young added13.
Leading by four, 29-25, at intermission, Saint Joseph's began the second half with a 20-3 run. The Monks utilized a formidable full-court press to force seven turnovers in the that span. The offensive surge came to a close six minutes later when freshman guard Shannon McFayden (Ipswich, Mass.) made a free throw to extend the SJ's advantage to 49-28.
The Mariners started the game strong with a 9-3 lead with 14:33 left in the first. MMA received scores from four different players and capped the run with a Devin Curless-Clark layup. Saint Joseph's managed to turn the tables on the Mariners with an 18-0 outbreak over the following six minutes. Junior forward Abby Young knotted the game at 9-9 with a jumper at the 11:29 mark and proceeded to complete the SJC run with a three-pointer, her second of the afternoon, to put the Monks up 21-9 with 8:20 before the half.
St. Joe's held a comfortable 29-20 lead after junior forward Lindsay Moore connected on a jump shot with 1:26 left in the first half. But the Mariners answered with a Hannah Lyons (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) jumper at the 1:06 mark and a three-pointer from senior guard Courtney Dufour (Augusta, Maine), sister of SJC junior point guard Mackenzie Dufour, to cut their deficit to four, 29-25, heading into the break.
The Mariners open conference play Tuesday hosting Husson at 5:30 p.m
