Box Score CASTINE, MAINE -- Castleton State rallied from a 47-44 halftime deficit to beat Maine Maritime Academy 91-71 in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon. The Spartans improved to 4-4 overall, 3-1 NAC while the Mariners' two game winning streak was snapped and set them at 2-5, 2-1.
Four players reached double figures for Castleton, led by Logan White's game-high 30 points. Mark Comstock added 17 for the Spartans, Dammy Mustapha finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Chris Barletta scored 10 points.
Ben Russell paced the Mariners with 18 points, Paul Campbell scored 16, Andy Ball 14 and Logan Poirier 13.
Chris Barletta's layup put the Spartans ahead 14-13 early in the first half. MMA answered with a Campbell layup and a bucket and three from Russell to lead 20-14 with 13:14 left in the opening half. Castleton retook the lead on Mustapha's layup at 10:49 before the Mariners went on an 8-0 run, with scores from Ball, Tyler Chiasson and Poirier, to lead 30-23 with 8:38 left in the opener.
The lead changed five times, and the score was tied once, in the next six minutes before a White three gave the Spartans a 44-42 lead. That lead was short lived when Russell connected from downtown and Ball hit a layup to give MMA a 47-44 halftime lead.
The first five minutes of the second half saw five ties before Ball's three at 15:47 gave the Mariners their last lead of the game, 56-55, with 15:47 left in the game. Russell tied the game one last time, 62-62, with 13:03 left before Castleton outscored MMA 29-9 the remainder of the game.
The Mariners return to action Saturday hosting Maine-Presque Isle at 2 p.m.
