HENNIKER, N.H. – Maine Maritime Academy's women's cross country team opened the 2012 campaign with a ninth place finish in a field of 11 teams at New England College's Mayflower Kickoff. Emily Fanning (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) ran a 25:42 for 40th place in the field of 96 runners to pace the Mariners. Babson's Marina Capalbo took first in 20:34. Babson finished third overall behind Husson and Green Mountain.
First-year, Catherine Bailey (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) placed 51st for the Mariners, while Ashley Marcellino (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) rounded out the top five in 69th place. Bailey logged a 27:21, while Marcellino put up a 29:43. Virginia Tolbert (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon) followed Bailey across the finish line in 52nd place at 27:34. Mariners' captain, Samantha DePlanche (Dover, N.H./Dover) finished the five-kilometer course in 29:09.
Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday at St. Anselm's Shacklette Invitational.
