FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime's Emily Fanning (New Boston, N.H.) ran a 26:48 for 26th place in the field of 44 runners competing at Maine-Farmington's Mount Blue Invitational on Saturday. The Mariners finished in fifth place among the five North Atlantic Conference teams running in the event, won by Husson University.
Husson placed three runners in the top five, including the meet champion, Alecia Palmer, who covered the 5k-course in 21:26. Kateri Jeffery clocked a 22:11 for third for the Eagles, while Theresa Frankinburger finished fifth. The Eagles accounted for half of the race's top 10 finishers.
First-year runners accounted for the next two Mariners across the line after Fanning. Gabrielle Wells (Kittery, Maine) and Virginia Tolbert (Lisbon, Maine) placed 30th and 31st respectively. Wells clocked a 28:11, while Tolbert recorded a 26:48. Samantha DePlanche (Dover, N.H.) finished 37th in 29:36, while first-year, Elin Sonesson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) crossed 38th three seconds later.
Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday at the Unity College Invitational.
