Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine-Farmington scored goals on both sides of intermission to hand Maine Maritime a 3-1 setback in the North Atlantic Conference women's soccer opener for both squads. Shelby Bryant (S. Portland, Maine) netted the game-winning goal to lift the Beavers to 3-1 (1-0 NAC), while dropping the Mariners to2-4 (0-1 NAC).
A hard collision between a Farmington striker and a Maine Maritime defender and keeper late in the 42nd minute set up a goal kick for the Mariners. An errant strike put the ball on the foot of Bryant at the top of the box. She arched it over the head of Mariners' starting keeper, Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) to break a 1-1 deadlock.
Local product, Alida Peake (Penobscot, Maine), put Maine Maritime on ice finishing a scramble in the 57th minute. Kayla Tuttle (Waterville, Maine) played a back heel in the box that left the Mariners' defense unsettled. The initial foray appeared to be lodged between keeper Kelsie Hilton (Monmouth, Maine) and a defender, but Peake pried the ball loose and pooped it over the prone players for the 3-1 final.
Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine) and Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine) combined for Farmington's first goal, which was answered by the NAC's leading scorer, Annie Koensgen (Placitas, N.M.). Dani Holt (Portland) served a corner that was headed home by Koensgen for her seventh goal of the season.
Koensgen's header was one of the Mariners' five shots in the game, and the only one on target. Farmington peppered the Mariners' cage throughout. Keepers O'Malley and Hilton combined for 16 saves. Working the duration of the second half, Hilton stopped 11 shots.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday when Maine-Fort Kent pays a visit. Farmington returns to action on Tuesday when the Beavers host Colby.
