Box Score CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime snapped three-game losing streak with a 62-45 win over Johnson State in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Friday. The Mariners improved to 3-4 NAC, 5-7 overall while the Badgers fell to 0-7, 2-11.
Mary Badeen led scorers with a career-high 26 points for Maine Maritime. Badeen, who scored 20 points in the first half, shot 9 of 16 from the field, including 7 of 13 from three-point range. Courtney Dufour added 15 points for the Mariners and Casey Everest had 10. Hanna Lyons had a team-high six assists and Leah Jackson led MMA with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Lazrin Schenck led Johnson State with 15 points while Ashley Jones and Brittany Robertson both added eight. Deanna Brandstetter grabbed a game-high nine boards for JSC.
Even at 5-5, early in the first half, the Mariners took a 15-5 lead with a 10-0 scoring run with 16:02 left. Badeen netted six in the run and Everest added four. Dufour nailed a three three minutes later to give Maine Maritime a 20-7 advantage before layups by Schenck and Kirsten Rand for Johnson State made it a nine-point game, 20-11, with 10:39 left.
The Mariners used the next seven minutes to explode on a 20-4 scoring run -- with nine points by Badeen, five from Dufour, four by Devyn Curless-Clark and two by Bekah Campbell -- to lead 43-15 with 3:28 before the break. A free throw from Brandstetter, and layup by Jenessa Swainbank for the Badgers made it 43-18 at halftime.
Dufour put the Mariners ahead 46-20 early in the second half before the Badgers went on a 15-4 scoring run, spanning almost eight minutes, to get within 14, 47-33, with 10:33 left in the game. Jones paced the Johnson State run with six points.
Maine Maritime led by as much as 20, 57-37, on a Lyons layup at 6:01 and its lead never went below 14 the rest of the game.
The Mariners return to action Saturday hosting Lyndon State in a NAC contest at 1 p.m.
