Chargers Defeat Mariners

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College used 42 points in the paint to defeat Maine Maritime 71-46 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's basketball action on Friday evening. The Chargers improved to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in NAC play, while the Mariners fell to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Paul Campbell was the only Mariner to reach double-figures with 10 points. He added five assists and five rebounds. Tyler Chiasson added seven points and seven rebounds and Jason Hatch scored eight points in 26 minutes off the bench.

Mike Dias led the Chargers with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Peter Donato added six points and pulled down a career best 13 rebounds. Stephen Thorpe had 10 points and a game-best five steals.

Maine Maritime began the game with a 10-3 run capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Hatch. The Chargers rattled off the next seven points to knot the game at 10-10. A layup by Colby-Sawyer's Donato  and a pair of free throws by Hatch tied the game at 12-12. Another Donato bucket gave Colby-Sawyer a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Colby-Sawyer's largest advantage of the first half was 14 points, after a 6-0 run was capped by sophomore Koang Thok's fast break layup that put the home team up 32-18. Campbell hit a trey for the Mariners, but they trailed 32-21 at the half.

Maine Maritime cut the deficit to six points on a Caleb MacDonald jumper four minutes into the second frame, but that was as close as the visitors would get. Colby-Sawyer slowly pulled away and led by double-digits for the last 14 minutes of the game.

The Chargers, who forced 28 turnovers, held significant advantages in points in the paint (42-18), second chance points (24-4) fast break points (14-0) and bench points (31-14).

The Mariners travel to New England College Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
