CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime split a non-conference women's volleyball double-header with Bates College Wednesday. The Mariners took the first match 3-2 before the Bobcats won the second 3-0. Maine Maritime sits at 12-8 this season and Bates is 9-13.

The Mariners won the first match 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-9.

After the Bobcats opening set win, Maine Maritime fought off Bates to secure the second. Knotted at 23-23 after a Gabby O'Leary kill, the Mariners received consecutive kills from Melissa Lail and Molly Marcotte to take the second set.

The Mariners led 24-18 in the third set after two errors and a Betsy Trenckmann kill before Bates scored the next three points. A pair of kills by Aubyn Link, and an error on MMA, made it 24-21 before Sydney Robertson's block put the Mariners ahead 2-0.

Bates evened the match at 2-2 and the Mariners took the fifth set with kills from Lail and Gillian O'Neal.

Nicole Peraica paced the Bobcats with nine kills, Tess Walther added 17 assists and six aces and Nicole Cueli tallied 19 digs.

Robertson recorded a game-high 18 kills for MMA, Samantha Tumolo posted 37 assists and four aces (Trenckmann also finished with four aces) and O'Neal recorded a match-high 21 digs.

Bates won the second match 25-20, 25-19 and 25-20.

Peraica led the Bobcats attack with 10 kills, Walther posted 15 assists and Cueli and Abby Leberman had nine kills each.

Lail led the Mariners with nine kills, Trenckmann tallied 12 assists and O'Neal had 12 digs.

Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday in a North Atlantic Conference double-header taking on Lyndon State and Johnson State at Lyndon.
