Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine -- Maine Maritime opened its North Atlantic Conference slate with a 3-0 setback to Colby-Sawyer Saturday. The match was a rematch of the past two NAC Championship games. The Chargers improved to 2-0 NAC, 12-6 overall, while the Mariners fell to 0-1, 8-7.
The first set featured three ties before the Chargers pulled away with a 10-4 run to win 25-14.
Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 10-4 run to open the second set. The teams traded the next few points, but the Chargers once again finished strong with a 10-2 run to take set two 25-12.
Maine Maritime held a lead 13 points into the third set before Colby-Sawyer tied the set at 7-7 on a Stephanie Vecchio kill. Precise serving by Colby-Sawyer's Laura Smolinski led to a 7-0 run and a 15-8 Chargers lead. Colby-Sawyer held the Mariners attack at bay with a -.129 hitting percentage in the set to propel the home team to the 25-13 win.
Colby-Sawyer received eight kills from senior Courtney O'Hara and junior Jackie Keating.
Melissa Lail led Maine Maritime with eight kills. Gillian O'Neal added four kills and a team-best 10 digs.
The Mariners host Maine-Presque Isle Saturday, 12 p.m., in a non-conference double-header.
