WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime placed eighth at the North Atlantic Conference women's cross country championship Sunday at Thomas College. New England College won the conference title for the first time in program history.
The Pilgrims were led by Abby Shafer, who won the individual championship with a time of 20:40 on the 5K course. NEC had three runners in the top ten and edged out defending champion Husson by three points. The Eagles finished second despite have two runners in the top three.
Colby-Sawyer came in third with 67 points and Castleton placed fourth with 103 points, while University of Maine at Farmington rounded out the top five with 128. Lyndon came in sixth (164), Green Mountain in seventh at 205, and Maine Maritimein eighth at 206. Johnson State (222) and Thomas rounded out the remaining ten-school field.
Freshman Jessica Faltings led the Mariners with a 16th place finish in 22:35.75. Emily Fanning was 55th in 25:41.84, Caroline Martin crossed in 26:05.70 to take 59th, Alice Stenquist finished in 29:48.14 and Gabrielle Wells finished in 30:13.72.
The Mariners return to action Saturday at the ECAC Championship.
