Box Score BANGOR, Maine -- Ashley Shine pumped in a career-high 22 points, including 13 in the second half, to lead Maine Maritime to a 72-64 win over Husson in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Mariners improved to 1-1 NAC, 3-3 overall, while the Eagles fell to 1-1, 2-2.
Shine was 8 of 16 from the field, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc, and grabbed seven rebounds. Kari Jones finished with 14 points and Hannah Lyons added 10. Bekah Campbell grabbed nine boards and Leah Jackson finished with eight points and eight rebounds for MMA.
Chandler Guerette led the Eagles with 17 points and Victoria McIntyre added 12.
The first half went back-and-forth, with both teams remaining within five points for the first ten minutes of the game. Husson created a little cushion for itself when Denae Johnson assisted a McIntyre three-pointer to put the Eagles up 20-12. Minutes later, a Samira Cruz three put Husson up 29-18. Maine Maritime closed the lead to five, 29-24, off a Shine free throw, followed by a two Jones free throws and a Lyons jumper to bring it to 29-28. Cruz responded with two free throws for the Eagles, and the team carried a 35-29 lead into the half.
The Mariners quickly evened the game, 37-37, early in the second half with five points from Jones and three from Shine and led 40-37 when Shine drained a three with 17:07 left in the game. Husson took its last lead of the game after a Guerette layup at 16:32 gave the Eagles a 42-40 lead. Jackson's traditional three-point play at 15:47 put the Mariners ahead for good, 43-42.
Maine Maritime led by 10 twice, 54-44, when Kristi Willey knocked in a three and 60-50 after a pair of Jackson free throws with 7:20 left in the game. The Mariners took their largest lead, 66-55, when Jones connected from long range with 5:34 left. Husson got as close as five on a Gab Duke layup with 1:06 remaining before Alex Winchester and Campbell knocked in a pair of free throws each in the final 50 seconds to help secure the win.
In what was a closely officiated contest, Maine Maritime took the edge at the line sinking 21 of 54 free throws. The Eagles converted 18 of 60 from the stripe.
The Mariners return action Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Castleton in a NAC contest.
