Box Score STANDISH, Maine -- Maine Maritime fell to Saint Joseph's, 3-0, and Southern Maine, 3-1, in non-conference women's volleyball action Saturday. The Mariners sit at 0-2 while Saint Joseph's and Southern Maine improved to 1-0.
The Monks edged Maine Maritime, 25-22, in the first set, took the second set 25-7 and won the third 25-22.
Ariel Knights led the Mariners with six kills and Gillian O'Neal added five. Melissa Lail had a team-high three aces and O'Neal added 14 digs to pace Maine Maritime.
In the second match, Southern Maine took the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-19, while the Mariners won the third, 25-21, before USM edged Maine Maritime in the fourth 25-23.
Even at 13-13 in the third set, the Mariners scored eight unanswered to take a 21-13 lead. USM got as close as 22-18 before Maine Maritime closed out the set strong.
The fourth set was deadlocked at 13-13 and the teams traded leads in the several points, which included four more ties, before USm won the final two points to win the match.
O'Neal had a team-best 10 kills, Lail and Knights each posted five aces while O'Neal had 12 digs and Molly Marcotte and Knights each had 11.
The Mariners return to court Saturday at the Colby Invitational.
