Mariners Win Third Maritime Classic; Go Unbeaten in Four Matches

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime was a perfect 4-0 against Massachusetts Maritime and SUNY-Maritime, and didn't drop a set all weekend, to win the Fourth Annual Maritime Classic Sunday. It was the Mariners third Classic title in four years.

The Mariners beat Mass. Maritime and SUNY-Maritime 3-0 in both matches Sunday and the Bucs blanked SUNY-Maritime 3-0.

Maine Maritime improved to 5-4, the Buccaneers, which won two matches sat weekend, improved to 2-6 and the Privateers remained winless at 0-6.

Sydney Robertson and Gillian O'Neal were named to the All-Tournament for Maine Maritime and teammate Melissa Lail, the reigning NAC Player of the Week, was named the Most Valuable Player. Christine McCormak (SUNY), Deb Langley (Mass.) and Melanie Holder (Mass.) were also named to the all-tournament team.

O'Neal had eight kills, six aces and five digs to lead the Mariners to 25-11, 25-8 and 25-11 wins. Lail added two kills and three aces, Betsy Trenckmann had three kills, four aces and four digs and Robertson posted four kills for Maine Maritime. Samantha Tumolo tallied seven aces and 18 assists for the Mariners.

Emily Calnan led the Bucs attack with three kills while Deb Langley posted seven assists.

Maine Maritime 3, SUNY-Maritime 0,

The Mariners attack posted a .541 hitting percentage which led to 25-5, 25-7 and 25-3 wins. O'Neal and Robertson each had seven kills, while Trenckmann and Lail each posted five kills for MMA. Trenckmann, O'Neal and Tumolo each posted seven aces and Tumolo added 23 assists.

Alyssa Esposito led the Privateers with one kills and three digs.

Mass. Maritime 3, SUNY-Maritime 0,

The Bucs fought off the Privateers to win 25-20, 25-15 and 25-18. Langley and Calnan led the MMA attach with four kills each, Langley also posted five assists,  Holder recorded seven aces and Michaela Garrity had a team-high six digs. 

Acklin had a match-high nine kills for SUNY-Maritime and added six digs, while McCormack had 10 assists.
